Flipped Class
This statistics class will be different from any other math course you've encountered. This course will offer a focused, hands-on experience in the research process and culminate in an end-of-semester presentation on this research project. Since this course is project-based in nature, it will be taught in a "flipped" manner. Part of class time will be devoted to working on your semester-long project.
Before class: Rather than a traditional textbook, this course provides a series of "lessons" to prepare students conceptually and technically for the various steps taken in completing their research project. Lessons are presented as a video tutorial (less than 30 minutes). All lessons and notes should be completed before the corresponding class session.
During class: This class will be conducted in lectures, discussions, and in-class activities; my goal is to guide you through the learning process. Therefore, it is essential that students remain up-to-date on all video lessons before each class period begins.
Class time: We will briefly review the "lessons" for the day, followed by students working on an activity with the support of other students, the instructor, and the tutor. Students will also share their work with others, seek additional support and clarification, and provide and receive help.
Goals and Learning Outcomes
Description
This course presents the basic concepts underlying statistical methods and covers descriptive statistics, probability, probability distributions, hypothesis testing, estimates and sample sizes, correlation and regression, chi-square tests, analysis of variance, and nonparametric statistics. Technology is integrated into the course. Applications of statistics to business, life sciences, social sciences, psychology, and other areas are included.
Student Learning Outcomes
By the end of the course, a student will be able to...
Explain basic ideas and meanings of statistical terms such as average, standard deviation, correlation, hypothesis tests, etc...
Present basic descriptive statistics: such as computing measures of central tendency and variation; and plotting basic graphs such as histograms and boxplots.
Identify and apply the fundamental laws of probability such as complements, independence, and the role of probability in statistics.
Given an inferential statistics problem, identify the appropriate hypothesis test, perform the hypothesis te"
